“My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart You, God, will not despise.” Psalm 51:17
Did you know that a broken heart can be a beautiful thing? I didn’t, until lately.
Until recently, I’ve always felt a broken heart was too messy. Sad. Discouraged. Ugly. Shattered. Unable to be completely mended. And that’s pretty much all true. But I never discovered any beauty in those things until I experienced my own broken heart.
Not the kind of broken heart because the boy you have a crush on in high school asked someone else to the prom. But the kind that is truly, completely broken. A mess. Dark, and seemingly beyond repair.
This verse shows us that God, in His beautiful way of restoring broken things, loves our broken hearts. They are true sacrifices to Him that He will never detest or turn away from. That is because a broken heart is real. Vulnerable. Completely undone and in need of total help and healing.
It’s us acknowledging that we can’t fix things on our own and in need of a Savior, the only One who can.
It’s us admitting that we don’t know what to do but turning to the One who does.
And to Him, that kind of heart is beautiful.
Because that’s when we step out of the way and let Him do miracles… His specialty.
